Culturing the Popular II: Engendering the Popular: Nov. 15, 2013.
The submission deadline is July 1st, 2013.
Welcomes proposals for presentations and panels from faculty and students. Collaborative efforts between faculty members and their students are especially encouraged. Conference organizers are interested in papers and presentations that explore and/or challenge how individual and collective identities/subjectivities are constructed through a variety of popular aesthetic forms such as digital media, film, literature, and music. Submissions that address these issues across national cultures, historical periods, and genres are especially welcome.
The keynote speaker will be Dr. Dawn Heinecken, Associate Professor, Women’s and Gender Studies, University of Louisville. Dr. Heinecken is the author of The Warrior Women of Television: A Feminist Cultural Analysis of the New Female Body in Popular Media (2003) and co-author of Measuring Up: How Advertising Affects Self-Image.(2001, with Vickie Rutledge Shields). She is the winner of the 2004 National Communication Association Award of Excellence in Visual Communication Research. Her 2009 article in Studies in Popular Culture, “Sexed Appeals: Network Marketing Organizations and Adult Novelty Home Parties” won the George Whatley Prize.
Please submit an abstract of 300 words or less and a brief biographical statement. For students the bio should include college, year, major, and any related work. For professors, the bio should include title, college/organization, department/area of specialization and a brief statement of recent publications or research interests. Abstracts and bios should be submitted to either culturingthepopular@converse.edu or madelyn.young@converse.edu in doc, docx, or rtf format.
