#SaturdaySchool: Sociology Terms and Concepts (D-F)

September 29, 2012 By Ragsdale-Puente 1 Comment

This #SaturdaySchool is a continuation of the previous #SaturdaySchool. It discusses important sociology terms to know that begin with D through words that begin with F. Look for the discussion on ethnicity and race. Some questions were raised about the difference between ethnicity and race. One person even asked if they are the same thing?

#SaturdaySchool will continue next week with sociology terms beginning with G. Don’t miss that one!

@SandyDarity @profragsdale Sorry 2 cut in here, but this drives me crazy. "Race" isn’t biological. But most Americans talk as if it were.Jack Hart
@SandyDarity @profragsdale Doesn’t the continued use of the the word "race" itself perpetuate the lie that humans come in "races?"Jack Hart
@JackHart67 @SandyDarity We agree – race doesn’t denote nationality tho, ethnicity can in sociological terms #SaturdaySchoolRhonda Ragsdale
This is like the view that we get rid of racism by ceasing to use the term race (cont.) @JackHart67 @profragsdaleSandy Darity
Until we address the unfair benefits and penalties associated with race classification, we must use (cont.) @JackHart67 @profragsdaleSandy Darity
ethnocentrism: perspective that one’s culture and way of life are the norm or superior to other cultures #SaturdaySchoolRhonda Ragsdale
the concept of race. Humans do come in races in a social sense with associated social advantages and costs cont. @JackHart67 @profragsdaleSandy Darity
Dispensing with race classification without dispensing with racial inequality is deeply unjust. @JackHart67 @profragsdaleSandy Darity
@SandyDarity @profragsdale Thanks. That is as good a version of the "race" as sociological construct as I’ve heard. That does not changeJack Hart
@SandyDarity @profragsdale the fact that the vast majority of Americans do NOT think of "race" sociologically. They think it is biology.Jack Hart

That’s true and a problem. But we should not stop using the term race when race is linked to disparity (cont.) @JackHart67 @profragsdaleSandy Darity
just because many people think about the concept inaccurately. @JackHart67 @profragsdaleSandy Darity
If we stop using that term, similar classifications will fall under another term, without gaps being eliminated @JackHart67 @profragsdaleSandy Darity
@SandyDarity @profragsdale Folks could be clearer in discussions of "race" by pointing out it is not a biological feature of human diversityJack Hart
