[CFP] The Border Project: Looking at Arts, History & Place in the U.S./Mexico Borderlands, December 2011 Symposium

We invite abstracts in English and/or Spanish that relate to or expand upon the following U.S./Mexico borderlands topics:

-cross-disciplinary explorations of arts and humanities in the borderlands
-gender, race, sexuality, and citizenship along the border
-the roles the arts have played in shaping state and nation, and in constructing and deconstructing privilege
-historical roots of cultural interactions across the U.S./Mexico border
-the relations among regional, national and borderlands artistic expressions-photography, film, and media representations of border cultures
-dynamics of high art and popular culture
-la frontera narratives, music, and folklore We encourage submissions from all related disciplines (such as Art History, Media Arts, American Studies, Anthropology, Sociology, Comparative Literature, Theater, Music, Film Studies, Gender and Women’s Studies, History, Ethnic Studies, American Indian Studies, Mexican American Studies, and Latin American Studies). Indian Studies, Mexican American Studies, and Latin American Studies)

The symposium format will stress the importance of interaction across borders–  international, disciplinary, and physical. To that end, we will pre-circulate papers in advance and organize our symposium sessions in both round table and presentation formats. We anticipate publishing selected papers as an edited volume Please send 1-page abstract and 2-page cv (including e-mail address) to the conference organizers at brgsymposium@gmail.com. Abstracts must be received no ater than June 1, 2011. Participants will be notified by July 1.
